After premiering at Sundance this year to great acclaim (and picking up the screenwriting award), Lake Bell’s directorial debut In A World… charmed Sundance London and is set to arrive here in regular cinemas later this year. The trailer is online courtesy of Yahoo.

Bell, who also stars, plays Carol Solomon, a young female voice coach, who joins the all-male race to land the white-hot new trailer of a blockbuster trilogy, and with it lay claim to the legendary trailer catchphrase "In a world..." In doing so, she must battle ingrained industry sexism, ridiculously self-important competitors and even her own father, Sam Sotto (Fred Melamed), a legendary voice-over artist who can't bring himself to recognize his daughter's talent.

The film also features a quality cast including Ken Marino, Rob Corddry, Demetri Martin, Michaela Watkins, Geena Davis, Tig Notero and, because it appears the law that every indie film should now feature film, Nick Offerman. We’re not complaining on that last point, by the way; Offerman is always good value.

Bell, who admits she’s always been obsessed with accents and voice sounds, knows exactly why she wanted to make the movie. "The male voice is just deemed, 'the omniscient voice,'" she tells Yahoo. "Whether it's because we coin God as a He, and it could be that sort of culturally significant, or it’s just literally the resonance and the are easier and more authoritative to hear. Which both are interesting conversations, and ones that I wanted to explore in the movie. It’s people taking on these omniscient, important, authoritative sounds while their personal lives are perhaps less perfectly tuned is an interesting place to start for comedy."

In A World… will arrive in the UK on September 13.
