The Weinstein Company has acquired The King's Speech, set to be directed by Emmy winning John Adams helmer Tom Hooper. The film will follow our current Queen Elizabeth's father George, in his own ascent to the throne following the abdication of his older brother.
The King's Speech will star Colin Firth as the stutteringly reluctant George 'Bertie' VI and Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush his pioneering and rather unconventional speech-therapist Lionel Logue, who helped him assume control of his voice in order to lead his country to war. The regal project reunites the pair following the 1998 Weinstein Co. costume drama Shakespeare In Love.
Principal photography will start later this year with the view to a 2010 release.
