Big changes afoot for Rodrigo Garcia’s latest drama, Mother & Child.

The last time we reported on the movie, the Columbian writer-director (Nine Lives, the forthcoming Passengers) had set up the movie, which intertwines stories about a woman who gave up her daughter 35 years ago, and an African-American woman seeking to adopt, at Universal, with cha cha cha, the Del Toro/Cuaron/Inarritu-backed production company, also on board.

He’d also secured Robin Wright Penn and Brittany Robertson to star in the movie. But today, that’s all changed.

Wright Penn and Robertson are out of the picture, to be replaced by Naomi Watts (presumably as the Child of the title) and Annette Bening (as the Mother, we’re guessing), with Kerry Washington and Shareeka Epps also joining the cast.

cha cha cha and Universal are also gone, with Julie Lyons of Mockingbird Films now producing, although Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu is still on board as executive producer.

Filming starts in LA in the first quarter of next year.
