Not to be confused with Bruce Willis starrer **Surrogates, Paul Verhoeven has signed on to direct The Surrogate, a story that puts a psycho twist on what Baby Mama played for laughs.

Based on the novel by Kathryn Mackel, the story follows a couple who have resorted to surrogacy in order to have a child. Unfortunately for them, all is not as it seems with the apparently perfect surrogate. In the book, dark secrets in her past come back to haunt them all (in a supernatural sense); the film synopsis simply casts the baby carrier as "insane". It may be worth noting that Mackel wrote a Christian thriller; whether the religious elements survive the translation to the screen remains to be seen.

Roderick and Bruce Taylor, who previously wrote Jodie Foster thriller The Brave One, have adapted the script from Mackel's book. Verhoeven's been developing several projects since Black Book restored his reputation / faith in movie-making in 2006, including Milla Jovovich-starrer The Winter Queen, also in pre-production, but this sounds like the sort of dark, twisty thriller that could be right up his alley.
