Following in the moon-boot steps of Kubrick, Kaufman, Tarkovsky, Trumbull and others, Christopher Nolan is blasting off into space with his new epic. If you’ve read Empire's Interstellar-y November issue – and it’s not too late – you’ll know that it carries the spirit of all those “hard sci-fi” pioneers in its cargo, as well as the thrills you’d expect from the man behind **Inception **and The Dark Knight. With the film gearing up for its worldwide release, both strands are present and correct in three new TV spots.

The first TV spot, the longest of the bunch, is called ‘Future'. It sets Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway’s mission to the stars in the context of the Steinbeck-tinged dustbowl Earth has become. Humanity’s very existence is riding on the mission, but there are real humans involved and people being left behind.

For the second ad, ‘Countdown’, we’re treated to Nolan’s lucky charm, Michael Caine, in the role of NASA wonk and professional father figure to McConaughey’s astronaut, Cooper. “You’re the best pilot we ever had,” he tells Cooper. And he should know, he was in Planes.

The third spot, ‘Make It’, ramps up the against-the-clock element with the pulse-frazzling stuff that will no doubt pack the movie’s third act.

**Interstellar **is out in the UK on November 7. Prepare yourself for Nolan’s space mission with [five films that influenced the filmmaker](http://www.empireonline.com/features/five-films-to-watch-before-interstellarrstellar).
