State of Play, the movie adaptation of the superb British TV mini-series about a politician involved in the death of his mistress and a newspaper investigating him, is assembling one hell of a cast.

The film already has Brad Pitt, Edward Norton and Jason Bateman in place. Now it's added Rachel McAdams (who's currently filming The Time Traveller's Wife), Helen Mirren and Robin Wright Penn.

McAdams will play a reporter working on the politician's (Norton) story, one which could make her career; Mirren will take the role of the newspaper editor, a role played by Bill Nighy on TV – and we can't think of a better alternative to Nighy; and Wright Penn will play the politician's wife, who becomes romantically involved with Pitt's character, the politician's former campaign manager who's now leading the newspaper's investigation.

Kevin Macdonald is directing from a script by Matthew Michael Carnahan.
