Walt Disney hasn't released a traditionally animated movie since Home On The Range, but the company's going back to the medium that made its name with the release of next year's The Princess and the Frog. You can see a teaser for the film at the official site, here.
The film, directed by John Musker and Ron Clements (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin), tells of Princess Tiana (Anika Noni Rose), who is searching for her prince by, erm, kissing amphibians. It will, in the tradition of Disney's classic movies, be a musical.
We welcome Disney's return to traditional animation. It was never the medium that stopped being popular, but the ideas that dried up. Films like Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and Tarzan are still wonderful watches, even since the advent of computer animation. Pen and ink has a level of artistry that, not to take away from any of the amazing work being done by Pixar and some of their colleagues, 3D often doesn't. In the best work, you can see how one animator's pencil strokes differ to another (watch 101 Dalmations to see what we mean) and the lack of attention on photo-real textures means that the details and flourishes start to count more. Long may it remain, we say.
