The election cycle here in Blighty is in full swing, so it seems the right time to look back at a much more vital and impassioned part of political history, the Suffragette movement. A teaser trailer for Sarah Gavron’s Suffragette is now online.
Boasting quite the cast – Meryl Streep, Carey Mulligan, Helen Bonham Carter, Romola Garai, Anne-Marie Duff, Brendan Gleeson and Ben Whishaw among them – Suffragette follows the struggles of suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst (Streep) and the campaigners around her, who lead an early feminist movement to get equality in voting at a time when women were considered ill-mannered to vote.
While their cause was just, it was also not an easy thing to try to turn the giant iceberg that was British politics at the time. The personal cost was great, but the results speak for themselves.
It’s just a quick look at this point, but with that cast, if this one turns out a winner, it could be a serious awards contender. With a script by The Iron Lady’s Abi Morgan, Suffragette will be out in the UK on October 30.
