Joe Carnahan’s Stretch has not enjoyed the easiest route to the screen since it was completed earlier this year. Originally shot for a low $5 million thanks to the involvement of the Blumhouse team, the director’s latest effort was removed from the theatrical distribution list by Universal and is premiering via digital download. That is something of a shame, because it looks like Carnahan has cooked up a gonzo treat.
Patrick Wilson stars as limo driver Kevin, a man seriously down on his luck. His girlfriend is cheating on him and decides to end their relationship in the middle of sex, he’s sick of the entitled, annoying celebrities and business types he shuttles around and, oh yes, he’s $6,000 in the hole thanks to a gambling problem. The problem being that he always loses.
So he’s desperate for a high-paying gig, and when he’s informed that a billionaire is looking for a driver willing to go the extra mile (and not just on the road), he takes the job. But that’s when things get really strange….
With Chris Pine, Jessica Alba, James Badge Dale, Brooklyn Decker, Ed Helms, Ray Liotta, Norman Reedus and even David Hasselhoff in the cast, Stretch launches on iTunes and Amazon on October 7 and VOD October 14 in the US, but there’s no word on a UK release yet.
