Jason Statham has signed up to play a florist - oh, who are we kidding? He's signed up to play another tough-as-nails bastard in The Killer Elite, based on the novel The Feather Men by Sir Ranulph Fiennes.

The book tells the (allegedly true) story of the assassination of four SAS operatives by a group of independent assassins called The Clinic, who carry out the murders under the orders of a former Shah of Oman who blames these SAS men for his sons' deaths. The Clinic make the deaths look like accidents - but they don't fool the Feather Men, a group who provide protection and vigilante justice for those who target SAS men and their families. The Feather Men - or, we suppose, Killer Elite here - hunt down those responsible for the deaths.

The only wrinkle in all this is that Statham apparently plays an "ex-Navy Seal" in this version of the story, which raises the dreadful prospect of him affecting an American accent for the role. Unless they mean Special Boat Services?

The film's being directed by Gary McKendry, previously best known for commercials work and Oscar-nominated short Everything In This Country Must about the Northern Irish troubles. The film will shoot in the autumn in London, Paris and Australia.
