Some TV show creators have to worry about whether they’ll be invited back to the small screen dance all through their first series. Then there are shows like Star Wars Rebels, which boasts a parent company with a big stake in keeping its linked universe alive. So it’s perhaps not too shocking to learn that the show is already confirmed for a second season.
That said, it's a little more surprising when you consider the fact that the show it replaced, Clone Wars, was unceremoniously dumped in favour of the new baby. And that Rebels is only just about to launch on the Disney XD channel with TV movie Spark Of Rebellion this week.
“We all love making Rebels, so we couldn't be happier that it's moving into a second season,” says Kiri Haret, Lucasfilm vice president of creative development in a statement about the news. “Our fantastic creative team is dreaming up new stories for the crew of the Ghost that will expand their experience of the galaxy and deepen their heroes’ journeys. The fan response to the show has been amazing, humbling and inspiring. We're looking forward to the adventure ahead.”
Star Wars Rebels follows a rag-tag group of characters trying to fight the newly ascendant empire half a decade before Episode IV. As has been confirmed by executive producers Dave Filoni and Simon Kinberg, the series contains Easter eggs that link it to the upcoming Episode VII. The show kicks off in the UK on Disney XD tomorrow (October 3).
