While both Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader have tried their hand at more serious work in the past, and have shared the cinema screen, the former SNL colleagues haven’t been together in something like The Skeleton Twins before. After decent notices (and the Best Screenplay award) at the Sundance Film Festival, it is set for cinemas and the first trailer is online.

The Skeleton Twins follows Maggie (Wiig) and Milo (Hader), twins who have been estranged for a decade. But when they cheat death on the same day – Milo by surviving a suicide attempt – they decide that the time has come to reunite.

Milo moves in with Maggie and her husband Lance (Luke Wilson) as the couple is trying for a child, but all is not quite right in the marriage. Still, the twins realise that their main issues are with each other, and set about rebuilding their relationship even as both deal with personal baggage.

From the looks of this, director Craig Johnson and co-writer Mark Heyman have pitched the tone in comedic drama, drawing on the abilities of their stars. The film arrives in the US on September 19, but is still listed simply as “2014” for the UK.
