Being that rare thing, the 2008 sequel that improves upon its predecessor, it should come as no surprise that Fantastic Four 2: Rise of the Silver Surfer topped the US box office this weekend. But the $56.1million it gobbled up is pretty impressive, considering the first film did only $154.7million in total.
Elsewhere in the chart, two other new entries fizzled a little. Nancy Drew, starring Emma 'I look a lot like my Aunt Julia' Roberts took a middling $7.1million. DOA: Dead or Alive – y'know that computer game film with her from neighbours that came out over here months ago – took a whopping $232,000. So that's rubbish in anybody's book.
Of the non-new entries, Ocean's Thirteen held up reasonably well, adding $19million, to bring its total $69million in two weeks; Knocked Up continued strongly, swelling its takings to $90million; and Pirates 3 continued its 'brilliant by any other movie's standards, but just OK for a Pirates movie' run and is now looking on course to just about pass $300million, so making back its production costs domestically.
