In perhaps the least surprising news since we learned that black is once again the new black, the four leading ladies of Sex and the City have signed on for a sequel to the $415 million grossing film.

Yes, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis have managed to hammer out the details and signed on for a new film. Said details, however, don't include a script at this stage (they're probably more financial at this point): but that's due in short order, given that the film is being put on the fast track for a summer 2010 release. Writer / director / producer Michael Patrick King is also back.

However, it's anyone's guess what on Earth will happen this time. The last film, four years after the end of the show, saw Parker's Carrie finally marry her Mr Big (Chris Noth); Samantha (Cattrall) return to her single life; Nixon's Miranda deal with her husband's infidelity and Davis' Charlotte finally have a baby. Given that they've already covered cancer, adoption, infidelity, viagra and men with hairy backs ad nauseam in the show, we're left wondering what there is to explore without ruining the happy ending of the show and previous film. Let's hope they don't break Carrie and Big up for no good reason (again) if they can't find something they didn't cover in six seasons and the previous film. Maybe they can make it now-ish and have the quartet lose all their money in the credit crunch and be faced with the awful prospect of buying normal clothes? Now that would be worth watching.
