They say cheats never win. But New Line will put that to the test with new comedy The Refs, written by Michael Barker, Matthew Weitzman and Chris McKenna.

The company has attached Peter Segal to helm the film, which sees underappreciated American Football referees who decide to get a little payback – not to mention a payday – by manipulating the result of the Super Bowl.

Segal already has sports experience – he last helmed Adam Sandler sports film The Longest Yard. But The Refs will have to find room on his schedule: he’s currently developing Starship Dave with Eddie Murphy and the Get Smart adaptation with Steve Carrell.
