With echoes of Don McKellar’s Last Night (a brilliant little film if you’ve never seen it) blending with a Steve Carell comedy and American indie sensibilities, Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World promises two things: a road trip with Keira Knightley and a title that most cinemas will have trouble fitting on their marquees. Check out the first trailer below.

Carell, playing one of his trademark schlubs, is Dodge, a guy who has decided to re-think his life. He doesn’t have long, though, because a massive asteroid called Matilda is roaring towards the Earth and will destroy all life when it hits in approximately three weeks. As humanity reels from the news, Dodge’s wife leaves in a panic and he makes a pledge to seek out his high school sweetheart.

Throwing a small spanner into the works is the comely Penny (Knightley), who is desperate to get home to her family. So the pair decides to team up to make the journey, meeting a collection of oddballs along the way.

Nick And Norah’s Infinite Playlist scribbler Lorene Scafaria has stepped up to both write and direct this one, and she’s gathered a hefty cast of performers for a variety of small roles including Melanie Lynskey, Patton Oswalt, Connie Britton, TJ Miller, Gillian Jacobs, William Petersen, Rob Corddry and Rob Heubel.

It hits US screens on June 22, but there’s no set UK release date yet. Hopefully we’ll get to see it before this year’s planned apocalypse hits in December.
