It’s been a little over a month since the first trailer for DreamWorks Animation’s attempt to retool Rocky & Bullwinkle-adjacent ‘toon characters Mr. Peabody & Sherman for today’s CG-happy yoofs. Here comes the second promo, which slightly falls into the trap of using lots of similar footage, but when you have to explain the basic story and not ruin every gag, them’s the breaks. Take a look…
Mr. Peabody is the world’s smartest dog. Cultured, kind, witty and a little bit sniffy sometimes (not just around fire hydrants), he regularly entertains presidents and has even invented time travel via a machine called The Wabac (pronounced The Way Back).
He’s also adopted a human boy, Sherman, and is raising him as his son. When Mr. Peabody tries to persuade Sherman to befriend Penny, the result is an unauthorised trip back in time and a rip in the space / time continuum, which wreaks havoc on the most important events in world history.
Before they forever alter the past, present and future, Mr. Peabody must come to their rescue, ultimately facing the most daunting challenge of any era: figuring out how to be a parent…
This still feels a little Bill & Ted-lite, but it could be fun, especially with the likes of Ty Burrell, Stephen Colbert, Allison Janney, Patrick Warburton and Stanley Tucci in the voice cast. Mr Peabody & Sherman will hit our screens on February 7.
