When the poster for Oliver Stones’ new crime thriller Savages arrived online earlier this week, there also came news that we could expect the trailer shortly after. Welcome then, to “shortly after”, as the promo has hit the Interwebs and can be experienced below.
With original Savages novelist Don Winslow adapting his own book, Stone’s latest promises to be a kinetic, crazed tale of two pot growers (Aaron Johnson and Taylor Kitsch) who have perfected a quality strain of weed. Their life in Laguna Beach seems ideal. Johnson’s the easy-going charmer, Kitsch is the hard-nut ex-military type who helps sort out any issues with dodgy customers and they share one other wonderful perk: O (Blake Lively), the beautiful blonde who is friends, and lovers, with both of them.
So what could harsh their buzz? Try a Mexican drug cartel led by Salma Hayek, who have decided to muscle their way north and carve out a piece of the boys’ action. Tipped off by a sleazy, bribe-taking DEA agent (John Travolta), they refuse to become part of Hayek’s empire. So she sends enforcer Lado (Benicio Del Toro) to kidnap O and deliver a strong message: join up, or their lady friend suffers the consequences. Which is when all hell really breaks loose, because the lads aren’t willing to roll over that easily, and strike out determined to get both revenge and the woman they both love back…
This looks like it could be worth seeing, and another change of pace from W and World Trade Center. Savages arrives on September 28.
