The biggest James Cameron-focused news around might be the announcement of the Avatar sequels, but he’s also been busy producing the odd film or two for other people. Chief among them – and set for release early next year – is Sanctum, which has just pushed its first trailer.

You can see why Cameron might be interested in Alister Grierson’s film: it features humans venturing off to places no one has tried before to find within the Earth; high drama when they get trapped; and heroic behaviour as they struggle to survive. Oh, and it’s true.

So now we’re all being brought into the experience via 3D, with Richard Roxburgh, Rhys Wakefield and Ioan Gruffudd all involved in the story of Frank Maguire, a master diver who has been exploring the South Pacific’s Esa-ala Caves for months now. But on his latest trip, son Josh and the rest of their team are suddenly cut off deep in the bowels of the cave system by a flash flood. How will they make it out alive?

Writer Andrew Wright, who crafted the script with John Garvin, was one of the original team who lived to tell the tale and the fictional footage, while clearly pumped up for extra drama, certainly does look exciting.

Between this and 127 Hours, 2011 is fast becoming the year of the trapped adventurer. Which just gives our Man In LA another excuse to stay sitting on the couch and not try to explore the Mariana Trench…[
