We’ve already had our first look at Ryan Reynolds in his Deadpool get-up thanks to that bear rug and fireplace reveal (see above). But a subject that has been even more hotly debated is whether the Merc with a Mouth will be able to express himself more fully, or have to rein himself in for a PG-13. The good news, at least according to Reynolds himself, is that the film is shooting for an R.
The news broke yesterday as part of an April Fool’s gag between Reynolds and Extra interviewer Mario Lopez, which at first had us wondering whether to believe a word that was said. But it’s a novel way of announcing that the movie will be going for it in terms of language and violence, which honestly feels vital if you’re going to capture the feel of the comics.
Deadpool features former Special Forces warrior-turned-mercenary Wade Wilson, who undergoes a rogue experiment as part of the Weapon X plan that leaves him brutally scarred but also boasting Wolverine-like healing powers. Armed with his new abilities and his pitch-dark sense of humour, he hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life, while taking on other bad guys.
Effects man/second unit director-turned-big-chair-occupier Tim Miller is calling the shots for this one, working from a script by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Production is now underway in Vancouver, with Ed Skrein, T.J. Miller, Gina Carano and Morena Baccarin among the cast. Deadpool will wisecrack his way into cinemas on February 12 next year.
