David Michôd made a big impression with crime drama Animal Kingdom, and his follow-up,** The Rover**, channels an even more intense setup. Take a look at the first teaser from the film, featuring a growly voice-over from Guy Pearce and shots of the cast in action.

Don’t go looking for anything in the way of plot, though, as this is more of a mood piece. But what a mood! If you’re after a little story grounding, here goes: the new film is set in the near future, at a time when a huge financial collapse has seen many people run to the Australian Outback, hoping to tap what remains of the place’s mines. Pattinson plays Reynolds, a man struggling to hold onto the last of his possessions in a world where lawlessness is rife and a gang has stolen something precious from him. His mission to retrieve it will not be an easy one, especially with violent types such as Pearce’s Eric lurking around.

While Michôd – who crafted the story with regular collaborator Joel Edgerton before writing the script himself – admits it’s hard to make an Australian apocalypse film without people conjuring up ideas of Mad Max, he definitely seems to be on a different track here.

There’s no UK release date for The Rover yet (heck, there’s no listed release date anywhere as of the time of writing), but with the teaser promising Summer 2014, hopefully it’ll hit screens here during the months to come.
