Reynolds Defends The Green Lantern Suit

It’s CGI way or the highway, apparently

Reynolds Defends The Green Lantern Suit

When the Green Lantern** trailer first hit, there was one specific gripe that shone out from all the message boards. No, not that Ryan Reynolds was too handsome, and no, not that Sinestro’s forehead was too red: it was his suit. Their suits. All the suits.

“They’re too cartoony!” some said, “The CGI looks crapola!” others declared. Probably not in those words, mind, but there you go. The suit definitely a bone of contention, what with it suddenly appearing when Ryan put on the ring and willed himself a shiny green outfit.

So when we were on set speaking to director Martin Campbell and star Ryan Reynolds, we had to bring up the old green CGI onesie, and they took the opportunity to defend themselves:

“It has to be virtual rather than spandex,” says Reynolds, wearing his grey sensor suit. “This is a suit from an alien planet.”

“It’s not The Dark Knight – I don’t put the suit on and my voice drops several octaves,” adds Reynolds, unfazed by the absence of green tights. “The suit is powered specifically on his will, his emotion, his creativity and his imagination. I love that.”

“Everything Hal creates are images from his childhood,” he goes on. “Or things fuelled specifically from his own mind.” Like green skin-tight body suits, eh?

But the thing is about trailers is that they’re not the whole movie. Apparently, anyway. So that means we’ll have to wait and see until the film when it hits the cineplexes June 17 to properly judge.

But if you’re intrigued, may we recommend checking out the new magazine (bet you didn’t see that one coming), which is on sale now in all good newsagents, and also on the iPad.
