Despite some seriously mixed reviews and an initial box office run that didn't exactly suggest a franchise in the making, Hot Tub Time Machine has garnered enough of a cult following that the sequel has now been made. Clark Duke showed up at the Paramount Comic-Con panel yesterday to debut the first, decidedly red band trailer, and it’s now online.
Reuniting Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson and Duke from the first film – John Cusack clearly decided to skip this trip – the new Hot Tub Time Machine starts in the alternate present day as set up at the end of the first. Corddry’s Lou has become a billionaire after “inventing” the Internet and Robinson’s Nick and Duke’s Jacob are also doing well. But then Lou is shot in the groin by a mysterious attacker and the three decide to head back in time and figure out what happened.
Except, partly thanks to them being very drunk, they end up ten years in the future, where everything is different again. And yet they still have a chance to find the killer, who appears to be from the future. It also gives them a chance to meet the likes of Adam (Adam Scott) and Gary (Jason Jones).
Fans of the original are likely to be happy with more crude comedy and gratuitous nudity and there is the usual banter between the leads. With Steve Pink once more calling the shots, Hot Tub Time Machine 2 is out on December 26.
