If this isn’t going to be one of the most talked about films of 2007, may we be horribly impaled like a teen in a slasher flick. You may already know a bit about Grind House, Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s tribute to 70’s exploitation, but its the first time the long time friends have spoken out together about the project.
For the uninitiated, the film comes in two halves – each director taking on their own story. The really cool element is the phony ads and trailers that will join the short features together.
Until now not much had been known about either part of the film, bar the titles, a few cast members, and that it’ll be squeezing everything exploitation into a couple of hours the way martial arts and westerns were mashed into the Kill Bill films.
Quentin, who says he is a fan of late 70’s, early 80’s slasher films, (but what isn’t he a fan of?) is making Death Proof a slasher flick where the murderer uses his car to mutilate his victims, and has earmarked Mickey Rourke as his lead. Rodriguez, meanwhile, promises that his gore-out – Planet Terror - will contain ‘infected people’ (zombies in an earlier draft – gotta love a crass re-write) menacing a local town.
The icing on the cake is that many of the geek director posse will be lending a hand for the conjoining trailers - Eli Roth and Edgar Wright among them. You lucky people.
