Blue-eyed acting legend Paul Newman died on Friday, succumbing to cancer at the age of 83.
Newman had been fighting the disease for some time and, last year, had given up acting as a result of failing health.
The ten-time Oscar nominated actor - who finally scooped the gong in 1987 for The Colour Of Money - saw his career get off to a rocky start with 1954's The Silver Chalice. Newman rallied from his disappointing debut, however,and found success playing boxer Rocky Graziano in Somebody Up There Likes Me.
His stardom was cemented with roles in such films as The Hustler and Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid but he was perhaps best known for his portrayal as an iconic non-conformist sentenced to hard labour on a chain gang in 1967's Cool Hand Luke.
His last feature film role as actor (rather than voice actor) was 2002's Road to Perdition. Newman also won two honorary Oscars, and gave a fortune to charity as a result of his Newman's Own line of salad dressings and sauces.
