While the poster might have heralded its arrival, it’s slightly unusual for a big blockbuster trailer to land in the middle of a weekend. Still, given that international versions hit YouTube in the last day or so, it’s perhaps wise for Universal to get the official take on new Tom Cruise pic Oblivion out in the world. Take a look above.
And, frankly, it’s an impressive promo. The first footage gives us a much better idea of the film’s style and plot.
Co-written and directed by Tron Legacy’s Joseph Kosinski, Oblivion takes place on a future Earth that has been ruined by years of war with an alien race. Though mankind won the conflict, the cost was half the planet’s surface. Humans have been evacuated to floating cities in the clouds and now roving drones track down the last of the alien scourge and keep the place secure.
We join Cruise as Jack Harper, a man stationed on Earth whose job it is to repair the drones. His link to the rest of the human race is Victoria (Andrea Riseborough) who he talks to via radio. They’ve got two more weeks before Jack’s punishment sentence is up and they can join the others in the sky.
But then Jack discovers something while hunting an alien survivor – not just a group of humans living underneath the surface, but also a woman (Olga Kurylenko) in a crashed spaceship who has a link to Jack’s past. And then dark secrets begin to emerge…
With Morgan Freeman and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau also in the cast, Oblivion will strike our screens on April 12.
