Those loveable Stone Age urchins The Croods - AKA Grug, Eep, Ugga, Thunk, Gran, Ooga-Booga, Dinobot, Bert, Homo Ridunculo, Bunk, Plock, Pook, Snook, Wook, Bongo and Badger - are returning for a second outing. Writer / directors Chris Sanders and Kirk DeMicco shared the news with ComingSoon.net, confirming that the yaklion's share of the movie's voice cast, including Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds and Emma Stone, will be reassembling for another helping of prehistoric adventure.

"There's not much to talk about yet," Sanders told Coming Soon of the pair's plans for The Croods 2. "We've got a big lump of clay and we're forming it as we speak." One of the high points of the first film was its refreshingly bizarro array of hydrid animals - koaleopard and mousephant among them - and DeMicco was happy to promise plenty more of the weird and wonderful creatures that stalked Grug and co. in the first film. "[There will be] lots of good creatures," he said. "We've got creatures that never got into the first movie. We're going to take a very, very close look at those."

That the DreamWorks Animation 'toon is potentially spinning into a franchise isn't a big surprise, with a spectacular $585 million banked since its March release. With the characters established, it would be good to see a little more sophistication added to the fun but throwaway storytelling mix next time.
