Underworld: Awakening, the fourth instalment in the goth-rocking Underworld franchise, will be upon us in the new year. Following the recent trailer, here's a new poster, which interestingly sees Kate Beckinsale's selene ditching her usual look in favour of a twinset and pearls, and some sturdy orthopaedic shoes. We jest, of course; it's the usual guns and PVC. Ho ho, readers. What to say? Slightly videogamey look to the not quite photo-real central Seline, further reinforced by the poster's slight Assassin's Creed vibe. And that fiery rain puts us in mind of the Max Payne movie.
There's also "Vengeance Returns" as the tag line. We don't recall Seline being about vengeance before; she was more about being on the run, wasn't she? But "Escaping Runs Again" doesn't sound as good, so we're taking "Vengeance Returns" to mean that she's back and this time she's pissed off. The "Returns" bit is referring to Seline's prolonged slumber (see below), and Beckinsale's not having been in Rise Of The Lycans, which was a prequel with Rhona Mitra.
Underworld: Awakening is set fifteen years after Underworld: Evolution, and sees catsuited vamp Seline coming out of a coma to find that she has a daughter (India Eisley): a vampire/werewolf hybrid, who's the product of that sudden tryst between Beckinsale and Scott Speedman in the back of a van.
Michael Ealy, Stephen Rea and Charles Dance are also on-hand, Mans Marlin and Bjorn Stein (Shelter) are directing from a script by John Hlavin and J Michael Straczynski, and Underworld: Awakening 3D will be released on January 20.
