We’ve had one taste of True Detective’s second season already, plus a couple of motion posters. Now here comes a little more from the new batch of episodes, which tells a very different story from the first season.
The setting this time is the Californian industrial city of Vinci, home to various characters including Ray Velcoro (Colin Farrell), a compromised detective, Vince Vaughn’s Frank Semyon, a criminal and entrepreneur in danger of losing his life’s work, while his wife and closest ally (Kelly Reilly), struggles with his choices and her own, with Rachel McAdams as Ani Bezzerides, a Ventura County sheriff’s detective often at odds with the system she serves and Taylor Kitsch playing Paul Woodrugh, a war veteran and motorcycle cop with the California Highway Patrol.
The latter stumbles upon a crime scene that triggers a massive investigation drawing in three law enforcement groups, a swathe of criminals and billions of dollars. And from the looks of it, this isn’t going to be easy for any of them.
It’s shaping up to be a stylish, brooding and dark series once again, even with the change in circumstances and cast. Once more written by creator Nic Pizzolatto, it debuts across the pond on June 21 and should be hitting these shores via Sky Atlantic shortly after that.
