New Trailer For The Rise Arrives

Two things we know from recent British crime thrillers: first, any plan dismissed as "a piece of piss" by one of its participants is bound to end in wholesale carnage; secondly, don't mess with Neil Maskell. Just. Don't. Judging by this raw new trailer for The Rise, Luke Treadaway's ex-con hasn't been paying attention. Alongside Matthew Lewis and two other pals, he's falling into both traps. Take a look; see what we mean.

As 22 year-old Harvey, Treadaway emerges from an unjust prison sentence spoiling for revenge against Roper (Maskell), the druglord who sent him there. Hatching a plan to hit Roper where it hurts most, the quartet set about clearing out his safe. Things, it's safe to say, don't go according to plan.

The flashback structure, which has Harvey recounting the fall-out of the heist to Timothy Spall's detective after the event, provides a confident, Usual Suspects-y framework, while the Yorkshire setting offers freshness to a genre that's worn the streets of London flat in recent years.

First-time director Rowan Athale's film made its bow at Toronto as 'Wasteland' to largely positive word of mouth. It's out here as The Rise on September 20, before appearing on all the usual home entertainment formats on September 30.
