Already a darling of this year’s Sundance, Me And Earl And The Dying Girl lands at the ember’s end of the summer with prizes and goodwill in tow. It’s going to have to struggle hard to avoid the ‘this year’s Fault In Our Stars’ tags, although Juno, Little Miss Sunshine and Napoleon Dynamite may also muscle onto the posters quotes too. Regardless, it’s one we’re looking out for. Check out the film's new trailer below.
Our protagonist is the socially-awkward Greg (Thomas Mann), a man with a clunky turn of phrase that's occasionally at odds with his pathological desire to fit in. When he finds himself thrust by his well-meaning parents (Connie Britton and Nick Offerman) into the company of his classmate Rachel (Olivia Cooke), he’s all, like, "god-do-I-have-to?" and “whatever!” about it.
But Rachel's potentially life-threatening illness – she’s been diagnosed with leukaemia – adds meaning to their time together and soon they’ve formed a bond. It’s one which deepens when he introduces her to Earl (RJ Cyler), a friend he can barely bring himself to call as such, with whom he makes short spoof versions of movies. As Greg and Earl start to work on a movie for Rachel, Greg starts to realise what he might have been missing out on.
The Town That Dreaded Sundown's Alfonso Gomez-Rejon directed this one, working from a script adapted by Jesse Andrews from his own novel. Me And Earl And The Dying Girl hits UK cinemas on September 9.
