Jonathan Glazer’s next feature, Under The Skin, has been bubbling under for a few months, spellbinding and occasionally mystifying festivalgoers from Toronto to Timbuktu. For the rest of us, its deepest secrets remain tantalisingly elusive. That's thanks in part to dialogue-free promos like this newbie, fresh in from the good people at Studiocanal. Based on Michel Faber’s novel of the same name, it’s a visual tour de force that won’t be some tastes but will knock the cotton socks off everyone else. As our man in Venice put it: “It’s a visually breathtaking piece of punk-art cinema that gives a lot of food for thought.”
Written by Glazer and Walter Campbell, and scored by Mica Levi of Micachu & The Shapes fame,** Under The Skin** follows Scarlett Johansson’s unnamed alien. She’s been sent to Earth by an alien corporation to prey on unwary hitchhikers. As the official synopsis puts it: “Part road movie, part science-fiction, part real, it’s a film about seeing our world through alien eyes.”
Already a critical triumph, Glazer’s feature-film return, nine years after **Birth **and 14 after Sexy Beast, will be with us on March 14.
