New Real Steel Poster Enters The Ring

Though Shawn Levy and his Real Steel team are pushing the idea that the movie is an equal balance between robots in the boxing ring and the father/son reconnection drama of star Hugh Jackman and his on-screen sprog Dakota Goyo, the marketing has largely focused on the former. That tradition continues with the new poster, which just arrived online and can be viewed below.

If we’re honest, it’s not exactly a knockout. The image of a robotic arm clutching the steel ropes, allied with a distinctly cheap looking typeface, makes this seem more like the cover of a sci-fi novel you see clogging the bargain bins at WH Smiths. Still, it’s a blip in what has been a fairly successful campaign so far.

Real Steel, for anyone as yet unaware, takes place in a near-future America where hefty, powerful robots have replaced humans as the combatants in the ring. Former pugilist Charlie Kenton (Jackman) is trying to make ends meet as a promoter/trainer/manager of brawling ‘bots, but his career has once again hit the skids. And then his estranged son Max (Goyo) shows up, looking to find some common ground with his dad.

The film is out on October 7. For more on the movie, check out our latest issue, which hits shelves on Thursday and is already arriving at the homes of subscribers. The feature is written by our brand new staff hire, Scribe9000.*

*It's great, but keeps getting oil in the tea and muttering quietly about killing all humans.
