Spike Jonze doesn’t do conventional, so perhaps it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise to find new pics of the monsters from Where The Wild Things Are squirreled away in the dark recesses of the skateboarding website he co-owns, The Girl Skate Company.
Fittingly for us scaredy cats frightened witless by Maurice Sendak’s book as youngsters, the inhabitants of the land of the Wild Things look a dark, foreboding bunch, with baleful eyes and just a touch of the Jim Hensons, circa-Neverending Story.
The pics are another encouraging sign for Jonze's much-delayed project, with a recently confirmed UK release of December 11, perfecty timed to take advantage of all that Christmassy nostalgia.
For those who haven't read it, Where The Wild Things Are tells the story of wolf-suited Max (Max Records), a disobedient little boy sent to bed without supper by his mother (Catherine Keener), who creates an imaginary world of fiercesome monsters.
