Want proof that we live in an unjust universe? Watch this latest (final?) trailer for Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim and reflect for a moment on the fact that, despite how excited we all are and how much our inner four-year-olds are throwing up with sheer anticipation, they still have not shown us this film. It's just not reasonable.
The story, as if that mattered when there are giant robots punching giant monsters, sees humanity fighting back against giant invaders from another dimension. The invaders are monsters known as Kaiju, after the Japanese monster genre of the same name, while the robots are human-powered "Jaegers", which means "hunters" in German. It's all very international and inclusive (but also has giant robots hitting giant monsters).
Charlie Hunnam plays Raleigh Becket, who pilots one of the Jaegers that are humanity's best weapon against the monstrous destroyers - but he's got his work cut out as the monsters keep on coming. And if you can stop cheering for a moment at the bit here where a Kaiju crashes through a building to take down a Jaeger, you might notice Idris Elba as humanity's inspirational war leader, Stacker Pentecost, and Rinko Kikuchi as the young wannabe Jaeger pilot who forms a bond with Raleigh. In other words, judging by the cast there will be some human drama that should be nearly (nearly) as good as the bit where a monster flies a robot through a city.
Frankly we're still cackling with glee at the Superman punch in this trailer and looking forward to seeing del Toro's completed film on July 12. There's a new IMAX poster for the film created by Sergio Grisanti, which you can see below, and beyond that is the original trailer for the film.
