You’ve seen a lot of the Ark already in the various teasers, trailers and even motion posters for Darren Aronofsky’s vision of the Noah story. In this new featurette, the director, his cast and production designer Mark Friedberg talk through the whys and wherefores of what is essentially a big wooden box.
Because there weren’t any B&Qs in Noah’s time, he had to rely on more of his own skills (plus, as the snippets of footage make clear, a little divine assistance) to build what would essentially serve as a floating shelter for the fauna that had to be saved along with the few humans deemed worthy of escaping a watery wipe-out.
Keeping to the way the Ark is described in the Bible, Aronofsky and co crafted their main structure to the same scale as it might have appeared, which naturally impressed his actors, even those such as Emma Watson, who have a little experience with big sets. Between the talking heads, there are one or two new moments from the movie, but it’s really still just more from the trailer bolted into place. Still, it certainly makes the Ark look impressive...
With Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Logan Lerman, Douglas Booth, Ray Winstone, Anthony Hopkins and Kevin Durand among the cast, Noah washes in our cinemas on April 4.
