We’ve all been there. You’re slaving away at a dead-end job when you’re kidnapped and nearly killed before being rescued by a mysterious warrior who looks like Channing Tatum in fetish Narnia cosplay. Then you’re told you’re actually genetically coded as galactic royalty with a ticking time clock on an inheritance that could change the world… No? Just Mila Kunis’ character in Jupiter Ascending, then? Right you are. That’s a roundabout way of saying that the new trailer for the Wachowski’s latest offering to the sci-fi pantheon is here.
Jupiter Ascending focuses on Kunis’ Jupiter Jones, a young woman who was born with signs predicting great things. But as an adult, a series of bad breaks have led to her gig cleaning other people’s houses. Then Caine (Tatum) comes a-calling, rescuing her when some very nasty medical types discover who she really is and attempt to terminate her.
Swept up into a huge struggle for the future of the solar system and our world in particular, Jupiter learns that she’s in line to be the owner of the Earth as part of a complicated hierarchy that stretches between the stars. Sadly for our heroine, some very powerful and nasty people are also laying claim to her birthright.
This latest look at the film widens the scope and ups the visual dazzle even further, and you’ve got to applaud the Wachowskis’ ambition in bringing something that fuses big space opera with their own strange sensibility and love of heroes who wear leather. With Sean Bean, Eddie Redmayne, Douglas Booth, Tuppence Middleton, Doona Bae, James Darcy and Tim Piggott-Smith also in the cast, Jupiter Ascending lands in our cinemas on July 25.
