Given that it comes from the twisted brain-machine of Phantasm and Bubba Ho-Tep, director Don Coscarelli, we should perhaps not be surprised that John Dies At The End looks like a lunatic horror romp. Because, honestly, that’s his specialty. The latest trailer is online, so take a look above or over at Apple if you prefer the full HD effect.
John focuses on college dropouts Dave (Chase Williamson) and John (Rob Mayes) who come into contact with a distinctly mind-altering drug nicknamed Soy Sauce.
It purports to stretch your mind and let you enjoy a huge out-of-body experience as you drift across time, space and dimensions. But there’s a one tiny problem: not everyone who takes it and goes on a trip comes back quite human, and soon the Earth - nay, the very universe - is under threat from strange creatures. John and Dave are not the heroes that our world deserves, or that it needs, but they’re all it’s got.
With Paul Giamatti, Clancy Brown, Glynn Turman, Fabianne Therese and character specialist Doug Jones in the cast, John Dies At The End should be worrying US iTunes accounts on December 27 and cinemas on January 25, but there’s no sign yet of a UK release. Fingers crossed….
