Mikael Hafstrom sure does love those scary fillums, doesn’t he? The Swedish director of 1408 has turned his attention to all things demonic by signing on to direct** Last Rite**, a thriller about the Vatican’s Exorcism School.
Yes, it may be April Fool’s Day, but according to Matt Baglio’s non-fiction book of the same name, the Exorcism School does exist – and that’s pretty damn… sorry, darn awesome.
Sadly, Hafstrom’s new movie won’t be a knockabout comedy, a la Police Academy, as bumbling new recruits get bashed into shape under the watchful eye of Max Von Sydow’s stern commandant. Instead, it will be a horror thriller about a new recruit’s struggle to come to terms with his faith – which he does by, ultimately, facing the Devil. After that, you’d have to say, it’s gotta be all downhill from there.
Michael Petroni wrote the script for the movie, which will be produced by Christy Fletcher and Contrafilm’s Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson. Hafstrom will move onto it, once he’s finished post on his latest movie, the romantic and decidedly demon-free epic Shanghai.
