Michael Bay has signed on to produce and possibly direct the upcoming book I Am Number Four, the first in a series of six planned sci-fi novels. The first book was written by two authors under a pseudonym, and it's said that one of those authors was James Frey, the writer of the bestselling semi-fictional memoir A Million Little Pieces.

The story focuses on nine teen aliens on Earth, who escaped their planet just before a hostile race destroyed it. While the nine are busy adjusting to their new world and new roles, the titular Number Four discovers that those who destroyed his world are still determined to hunt him down.

The film's being developed at DreamWorks, with Steven Spielberg said to be planning an active behind-the-scenes role as he did in Transformers. While the premise sounds a tiny bit familiar, and it's all very much on the drawing board at the moment, we're intrigued enough to hope that this will be interesting. And surely blowing up a planet in the opening scenes will satisfy even Michael Bay's love of pyrotechnics.
