In the pantheon of signs foreshadowing a coming apocalypse, settling into your aircraft seat and learning that Nicolas Cage is your pilot today might just be up there among the worst. But here he is in the teaser trailer for Left Behind, as the captain of a flight when the Rapture inconveniently snatches the righteous off to Heaven and leaves him and lots of other people to deal with the end of the world.

Left Behind, which marks the first directorial effort of stunt legend Vic Armstrong in twenty years, is adapted from the mysteriously bestselling books by Jerry B. Jenkins and Tim LaHaye, writers not known for their subtlety when it comes to including religious briefings in the guise of thrillers.
Cage is Rayford Steele, who must deal with the fallout when the end of the world kicks off as foretold in the Bible. Given that it’s a teaser trailer, there’s not much more to it than that, but the likes of Chad Michael Murray, Lea Thompson, Jordin Sparks, Cassi Thompson, Nicky Whelan, Quinton Aaron, and Martin Klebba are among those who struggle with the oncoming apocalypse. {Left Behind poster}
It’s an odd choice for Cage and Armstrong, so we’re fascinated to see why they’d want to tackle it, especially given that the book series – yes, there’s a potential franchise lurking here if people actually go to see this – has already been adapted into an even lower rent set of straight-to-DVD movies that starred Kirk Cameron.
Will Left Behind get a rapturous welcome? We’ll find out when the dead rise the film arrives in the US on October 3. So far, there have been no indications it has a UK release date yet.
