It’s not every trailer that can boast a new song by U2. But Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom’s latest promo can make exactly that claim thanks to some behind the scenes work by producer Harvey Weinstein. Have a look (and a listen to ‘Ordinary Love’) below.

Long Walk To Freedom finds Idris Elba playing Nelson Mandela at different times in his life, but focusing on his days as a political activist and the actions that led to his imprisonment. We also see how he met his wife, Winnie (Naomie Harris) and his years in shackles as a prisoner of the state.
“Over the years U2 and I have had a superb relationship including partnering on the Academy Award-nominated and Golden Globe winning song ‘The Hands That Built America’ for Martin Scorsese’s Gangs Of New York,' " the producer said in a press release picked up by The Playlist. "When I asked them to consider writing a song for Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, it was the fastest ‘yes’ I have ever received. The band saw various cuts of the film over the summer and worked diligently to write a song that truly reflects Nelson Mandela. I think they did a brilliant job honouring the man and the leader they have known for over 20 years.”
With Justin Chadwick calling the shots from a script by William Nicholson, Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom is out here on January 3.
