Once there was just Nosferatu, all dangly fingers and stooped gait, making his way sheepishly across Europe spreading fear and anguish. Now you can barely move for screen vampires. They come in all shapes and sizes: there's demon-hunting ones, anime ones and ones with Vidal Sassoon hair.

And now, thanks to FilmNation Entertainment, we're soon to be introduced to The Last Vampire. The production company has picked up the rights to Christopher Pike's bestselling series of six teen novels.Their heroine, 5000 year-old vampire Sita, has never aged past her teens, allowing her to embark on a passionate love affair with a high school student, all while battling demons, personal and otherwise.

While obviously hoping to build a Twilight-style vamp-franchise, FilmNation's Aaron Ryder points out that The Last Vampire series long predates Stephenie Meyer's books on the bestseller lists. “We could not pass up the opportunity to bring to life one of the best characters of young adult fiction. We see this as the original teen vampire series that started the craze today.”

Ryder will oversee production for FilmNation, along with Beatrice Springborn.
