Be Kind Rewind, the latest movie from Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) has long been one of our most anticipated films, but has been very quiet on pre-publicity. Until now. The full trailer has just gone online here, and smack my ass and call me Judy if it isn't every bit as charming and daffy as we could have hoped.
The story is of two video store workers (remember videos? They were like DVDs but crappy and huge), played by Jack Black and the ever watchable Mos Def, who are surprised to learn that all their product has been mysteriously wiped. What's more surprising is that the cause is Jack Black's magnetism. So, rather than go bust, they decide to remake all the films themselves using lots of tin foil, zero shame and industrial quantities of gumption.
The trailer will be a delight for anyone raised on 80s movies (we love the recreation of Ghostbusters' Slimer as a torch in a green plastic bag) and, this being a Gondry film, the whole thing has a feeling of barely contained chaos. If the full film can maintain this sweet, ramshackle tone then this could hopefully be one of the year's best.
