Hmm… looks like Eclipse, the movie perhaps better known as Twilight 3, could be about to get interesting, with the news that Summit Entertainment has targeted **The Orphanage **director, Juan Antonio Bayona, to direct.
Erm, we should say ‘more interesting’, obviously. We can’t get enough of Twilight, of course. Go, vampires! Yay, big hair! Three cheers for Gryffindor!
With the second Twilight movie, New Moon, set for release in November, and Eclipse lined up to debut on June 30, 2010 (that sound you can hear is the cash cow being milked dry), the punishing schedule meant that New Moon director Chris Weitz wouldn’t be able to come back for part three.
So Summit drew up a list of directors, including Weitz’ brother Paul, and Drew Barrymore, who withdrew from the race last week. Nevertheless, their apparent decision to plump for Bayona – the decision has yet to be officially announced – is an intriguing one, given that a) he hasn’t yet worked in the English language and b) there’s a chance that he might be able to inject bona fide scares into a movie about vampires and werewolves. After all, **The Orphanage **was one of the creepiest, most disturbing horrors of recent years – if he can bring that same visual flair and assured control of tone to Eclipse, it could be something worth screaming at.
To be fair, Bayona had been set to direct an English language movie with Hater, a dark thriller produced by his old mentor Guillermo del Toro, but if he takes the Eclipse gig, that should take precedence.
Melissa Rosenberg is currently working on the script for Eclipse, in which Kristen Stewart’s Bella is forced to choose between her vampire lover, Edward (Robert Pattinson) and hairy werewolf bloke Jacob (Taylor Lautner). Meanwhile, Edward is forced to choose between the VO5 mousse or the L’Oreal gel. Tough call.
