Jim Carrey's star has been in the descendant for a few years, with the likes of Will Ferrell and Steve Carell stealing his comedy crown and his attempts at drama meeting with mixed success. But, could the team behind Bad Santa rescue him?

Carrey has signed up for I Love You Phillip Morris, which will be directed by Bad Santa writers Glenn Ficarra and John Requa. Based on a book by Houston Chronicle journalist Steve McVicker, the fact-based film will see Carrey play married father Steven Russell, who winds up in jail and falls in love with his cellmate. When the object of his affections is set free, Russell continually tries to escape to be with him.

A number of Carrey projects have been cancelled recently due to sky-high costs (Carrey's own salary is generally in the region of $20million). I Love You Philip Morris will cost only $20million total. Could an edgy, indie project be just what he needs to get back on top?
