When we first heard that a trailer for Andrew Niccol’s adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s The Host would be arriving this week, we wondered just what would be shown, since the film only started shooting last month. Well, now we know, as the teaser has gone online and can be watched below.
So what footage from the film is included? That would be none. But it doesn’t mean that the short promo itself isn’t intriguing. It helps that star Saoirse Ronan gets to provided a moody voice over that talks about how the world is free from war, hunger and suffering. There’s just one teensy little catch: it’s because it no longer belongs to humanity.
Nope, as Meyer’s novel chronicles, we’ve been taken over by a parasitic alien race that invades minds and wipes the original personality. Earth becomes a paradise, but at the cost of most of human consciousness. And somewhat naturally, there are still a few uninfected Earthlings who would rather everything go back the way it was.
Ronan plays Melanie, a young woman who was targeted by a veteran alien named Wanderer. But it turns out that Melanie had a much stronger will than the extra-terrestrial ever expected, and they merge. And then Melanie joins the human resistance effort…
With William Hurt, Jake Abel, Diane Kruger, Frances Fisher and Max Irons also in the cast, The Host will be out on March 29, 2013.
