Warner Bros. and the team busy finishing the studio’s big superhero hope for the year, Green Lantern, have been fighting a bit of an uphill battle in recent months following the disappointing reaction to the first trailer and the early footage shown at Comic-Con. With little recent publicity thanks to complicated effects issues, they needed to pull a green rabbit out of their hats. Now it looks like they’ve made a smart move by shoving some of the footage that debuted at this week’s CinemaCon and Saturday’s WonderCon events online for everyone to see.
The new scenes are a definite upgrade from the material shown to fans last year and have been garnering positive reactions from those in attendance and around the ‘net.
We get a chance to watch not only Ryan Reynolds’ Hal Jordan meeting the dying Abin Sur and his first brush with the ring that has chosen him to become the latest recruit for interstellar task force the Green Lantern corps. We meet Tomar-Re (voiced by Geoffrey Rush, who trains Hal) and some of the other Lanterns on corps home world Oa, including tomato-faced Mark Strong as Sinestro. There’s also a clear look at the evil Parallax, the ancient alien entity that embodies fear and is the Lanterns’ big chief nemesis. And finally, a quick grab bag of scenes with Peter Sarsgaard’s Hector Hammond and Blake Lively’s Carol Ferris.
So, turn down the lights, imagine yourself in a hall filled with coughing, rustling people, take a look at the footage and let us know what you think…
