Writer/director Rowan Joffe has chosen a distinctly different sort of literary adaptation to follow 2010’s Graham Greene-based Brighton Rock. Before I Go To Sleep is based on the bestselling mystery potboiler by first-time author S.J. Watson, and reunites Nicole Kidman in on-screen matrimony with her Railway Man husband Colin Firth. Their marriage is under rather a different strain this time...
Kidman stars as the amnesiac Christine, who must solve a dark riddle despite (with unavoidable shades of Memento) forgetting her progress every 24 hours. She's understandably reliant on Firth's help with her frustrating life, until she discovers some terrifying new information throwing everything she thinks she knows into question.
"It's classic noir," Joffe promised Empire a few months ago. "They remind me of a Hitchcock pairing: a tall, dark handsome lead and a beautiful blonde playing psychological cat and mouse!"
Mark Strong and Anne-Marie Duff co-star in the film, which arrives via Ridley Scott's Scott Free production company. It's out in the UK on September 5.
