Alongside his healthy career in front of the camera, Joel Edgerton has been a writer and producer for a while now, helping the likes of David Michôd get movies made. Now he’s taking on the director’s chair for the first time, bringing us a stalker drama called The Gift.
Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall star as Simon and Robyn, a successful married couple with a nice house and happy life that is proceeding as they planned it. But then comes a chance encounter with Simon’s high school acquaintance, Gordo (Edgerton), whom Simon initially doesn’t recognize – or seemingly doesn’t want to – but who soon starts trying to ingratiate himself into their world.
But even as the couple decide he’s just a little too off to keep visiting them, things start to take an even darker turn, and the truth of what occurred between Simon and Gordo 20 years ago leaks out. As Robyn learns the terrible truth, she starts to wonder about the people closest to her...
Putting itself firmly in psychological thriller territory, Edgerton’s debut comes to us via the Blumhouse team, and promises to deliver some of the chills we’ve come to associate with the team behind The Purge and Sinister. It’ll trouble UK cinemas on August 7.
